First prize of $500 went to one Peter P. Ott of Manhattan for his soap torso done in a Greek manner. That the contest had left the realm of advertising and ventured into the realm of pure art seemed indicated by the jury of award which listed among others Sculptors Gutzon Borglum, Lorado Taft, Artist Charles Dana Gibson, Architect Harvey Wiley Corbett. Many of the competing sculptors were obviously serious in their work. The work of some was creditable. To most, however (including Colyumist Robert Littell of the New York World who suggested that the advantage of soap statuary...
...PROGRESS of youth through the realm of literature is dated by the discovery of the figure which lurk behind each turning in the path. Just as Shelley and the author or "The Way of All Flesh" point the way at certain crossroads, so the smooth-shaven and deeply lined face of Charles Baudelaire at its appointed time looms up like certainty for those who follow the orthodox road to literary sophistication. As the author of this most recent life of Baudelaire notes in his introduction, the "poet maudit" generally appears on the horizon of his American readers during their college...
...shorter subjects, there is a "Krazy Kat" film that lives up to the high standard that these black and white pictures have set in the realm of the talkies. "Under the afflatus of the 18th Amendment" the court held that the U. S. could seize barrels, bottles, corks, labels, cartons, etc., etc. when they were put on sale to be used in connection with illicit liquor...
Since his entry into the realm of light and "situation" comedy Mr. Dix is a much improved actor over the Dix of racing car melodramas. Tinged with a bit of Shavian deviltry the play depicts the plight of an electrician who for the sum of a few thousand dollars is willing to lower himself and become a gentleman. For some reason, and, she is fairly pleasant, he gets all mixed up in his singleness of purpose. The story ends happily, with Mr. Dix still an electrician. The picture is an amusing satire on the Ward McAllister type...
