...Dostum truly has evolved, there's no doubt a strong element of realpolitik behind the transformation. Since the defeat of the Taliban, Dostum has reasserted control over his home turf, the ethnically Uzbek and Turkmen provinces of Jowzjan and Faryab. But the onetime master of the north now finds his position challenged by the growing power of his erstwhile ally in the Northern Alliance, the mainly Tajik Jamiat-i-Islami faction. Jamiat's ascension has prompted an unlikely alignment between Dostum and Hamid Karzai, the patrician Pashtun tribal leader who heads Kabul's interim government. ...often went logy from all its earnest senatorial harrumphing, which was every bit as compelling as a lazy committee hearing on C-SPAN. Birds of Heaven is a record of dedicated wonder in the face of natural beauty and the wisdom that wonder can bring. For, as he writes, "if one has truly understood a crane?or a leaf or a cloud or a frog?one has understood everything...

As for the economics, in early September I would have said that the U.S. would have bottomed by the end of December. But Sept. 11 has compressed into a short period of time things that would have taken months to happen. It compressed monetary policy and corporate restructuring. It quickened the blowout in markets and catalyzed the crash in consumer sentiment. So rather than a long and frustrating U-shaped bottom, we're getting a jolting...
