Farm. One-half of the total number of U. S. farmers make less than $800 a year. The profits of only one-quarter exceed $1,200 per year, the Department of Agriculture's "minimum wage" for a farm family. Reason for low income: For every dollar the consumer pays for food, about 30 cents gets back to the farmer, 70 cents going for transportation, marketing, etc. The fanner gets no more because, ambitious, he grows too much, puts it up for sale.
