WHAT RAISES Husker Du above the gaggle of hard core noise on the scene today is its deliberate shunning of the often-phony themes of that genre--anger and rebellion. Instead, they tap a feeling usually associated with less subversive types of music--pain. In "Broken Home. Broken Heart," Mould sings of the pain of a broken home; on "Whatever," of parent-child misunderstanding. Either way, his howls of anguish sound genuine, with a passion that leaves the listener thinking of Ray Charles rather than punk. Even the album's one great footstamper--Hart's "What's Going On"--stands...

...play worked. As witty and discreet as if it had been written in the 1930's, it defined Bennett's rebellion against his austere schoolmates as one of style and substance. The film version, directed by Marek Kanievska, is a botch. Every shot is vaselined with romanticism; every dewy undergraduate looks ready to pose in his Calvins; and Rupert Everett's Bennett, a dandy dandy on the London stage, has become gross onscreen. Instead of a national tragedy in embryo, what we get is a posh summer camp. -By Richard Corliss...

...April, Richardson was quoted as saying he "might well have joined the rebellion against" the right-wing Salvadoran government before the rebels received Cuban and Soviet backing. Shamie called Richardson "naive" and said in a statement released by his office, "I would not have joined the Marxist rebels in Salvador, even if they had never been supplied by Cuba and Russia. They have killed innocent people, and terrorized thousands of ordinary El Salvadoreans for trying to vote...

...laughing one. A superabundance of news has the benumbing effect of mob rule on the senses. Every problem in the world begins to look unreachable, unimprovable. What could one lone person possibly accomplish against a constant and violent storm of events that on any day include a rebellion of Sikhs, a tornado in Wisconsin, parents pleading for a healthy heart for their child? Sensibilities, overwhelmed, eventually grow cold; and therein monsters lie. Nobody wants to be part of a civilization that reads the news and does not care about it. Certainly no journalist wants that...
