DuBois, who died last August 27 in Accra, Ghana at the age of 95, was the first Negro to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard. A distinguished historian, sociologist, and poet, he was co-founder of the NAACP in 1909. He became a Ghanaian citizen three years ago.
The Harvard-Radcliffe Socialist Club is considering the endowment of an annual lecture in honor of William E. B. DuBois '90, famous historian and the first Negro to receive a Ph.D. from the University. DuBois died a Ghanaian citizen last Aug. 27 in Accra, at the age of 95.
A minimum of $5000 will have to be raised in order to receive official University sanction, since Harvard refuses to maintain an endowed lecture for any smaller fund. Once this sum is pledged, the lecture would still require approval by the Corporation.
Freshman will receive tomorrow a confidential questionnaire concerning parietal regulations from the Harvard Council on Undergraduate Affairs.
Reaction of the academic community to Barghoorn's arrest has, however, been violent. Students and faculty at Yale have organized a committee to protest the action.
