This seems an unfair fate for what is perhaps Mr. Williams' major contribution to the theatre, the only reasonable competition being The Glass Menagerie. Sure it contains all the "sick" elements that have become so exhaustively familiar in his more recent work--the mendacity, the liquor, the sex-starved woman, the stud male, and so on. But the most distinctive characteristics of Williams' writing are his vivid and powerful command of language and his fascinating use of rhythmic speech patterns--sometimes lyric, sometimes syncopated like a primitive drum...
...century, the French nation has taken more eagerly and seriously to organ composition than any other in the world. Mrs. Pardue consequently performed four recent works. Improvisatoy bombast characterizes the Hymne d'actions de graces by the blind organist Jean Langlais. Messaien's fine Banquet celeste, though an early work, bears the clear stamp of its composer, who has refused to adhere to any "school." It is seraphic, and mystically inconclusive. Jehan Alain's lucid Phrygian Ballade and familiar Litanies point up the great loss we suffered when this young composer was tragically killed in World...
...Recently, President Eisenhower announced that he would "walk an extra mile" to reach an agreement at the "summit." While the President (vide his recent remarks about the Moscow Art Exhibit) is about the least likely authority to be quoted in an art review, I'll draw a somewhat shaky parallel from his political mots justes and urge all 3850 of my potential readers to walk the "extra mile" across the Yard to the Fogg Museum for a truly rewarding meeting at the summit of this past century...
Only a small part of the ocean bed is yet known in any detail. Recent surveys have shown that large areas of the bottom are covered thickly with rounded, blackish nodules that have grown as crusts around some nucleus, sometimes a shark's tooth. They are mostly iron and manganese oxides, but they often contain considerable amounts of copper, nickel and cobalt. "The amounts are absolutely staggering," says Dr. Henry Menard of Scripps. One 10-million-sq.-mi. area in the Pacific, he estimates, has nodules worth hundreds of thousands of dollars per square mile...
