...Promoters of self-help abortions are looking at several methods, including RU 486, the controversial French pill not yet available in the U.S. But most of the attention is focusing on menstrual extraction, a technique that can be used to end a pregnancy through the eighth week. At a recent meeting in Dallas, sponsored by the local unit of the National Organization for Women, more than 100 women saw a 30-minute videotape that showed how the procedure is performed with a $90 kit containing a glass jar, plastic tubing and a special syringe. "We're being realistic," says Charlotte...
...Despite recent structural mishaps with McDonnell Douglas' problem-plagued DC- 10 jumbo jet, the aircraft manufacturer plans to add an additional fuel tank beneath the rear engine of an updated version of the plane called the MD- 11. Some startled pilots at Delta Air Lines -- which is buying the new plane -- are outraged that the designers would place 2,000 gal. of combustible fuel right under the same engine that disintegrated last month on a United Airlines DC-10. ...shoemaker's fortunes rely heavily on advertising. Nike's theme, "Just Do It," which urges would-be customers to get off their couches and onto their exercise bicycles, has been widely praised. Gear keeps retired Los Angeles Lakers star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on its payroll; his former coach Pat Riley...
Officially recognizing that such nationalities issues are "acute," the Kremlin last week proposed a policy that would grant increased autonomy to all 15 republics and rewrite the 1922 treaty creating the Soviet Union and defining the rights and obligations of its republics. "Recent events," said the proposal, show "a need for radical transformations in the Soviet federation." Specifics are to be discussed at a special Central Committee plenum next month. It will be another risky venture for President Mikhail Gorbachev, aimed at resolving the nationalities problem without curtailing his reform program -- or his hold on power...
...recent sunny morning, plucky Alison Akke, 15 months old and dressed in a dainty blue sundress, is lugging two horseshoe crabs by their spiny tails toward the water. Nearby, her mother Emma, 35, peers at one until it wriggles and then gingerly hauls it away. She and her daughter line up the crabs, side by side, along the beach just above the incoming tide. Besides saving some crabs, they have also tidied the sand, once littered with topsy-turvy animals. Quips Alison's mom: "Instead of mowing my grass, I come out here and clear my beach...
