...political reporter for the Washington Post, Taylor earned a footnote in political lore when he asked Hart, "Have you ever committed adultery?" It was a question many believe transformed presidential politics, and for the worse. But Taylor argues in See How They Run that Hart, because of his reckless behavior and his challenge to reporters to "follow me," was a special case. Hart "took too literally the invitation in the old Beatles song: Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" Adds Taylor: "Do, if you like. Just don't expect the rest of us not to watch...

Children express the panic and anxiety they feel in myriad ways: in massive weight gains or losses, in nightmares and disturbed sleep, in fatigue or listlessness, in poor grades or truancy, in continual arguing or fighting, in drinking or drug abuse, in reckless driving or sexual promiscuity, in stealing and mugging. A fairly typical history among disturbed kids, says Dr. L. Republicans nominate William Weld, a tough ex-prosecutor, rather than a gray legislator blessed by the G.O.P. convention...

Those opposed to the development contend that the state is being, if not villainous, at least reckless. For one thing, they argue, putting power plants close to an active volcano is foolhardy. Another objection is that using the total area of cleared forest land to measure environmental damage is misleading. The roads that connect cleared areas are also destructive, since they provide avenues along which species from one area can invade another (plant seeds, for example, can stick to vehicle tires). Wao Kele O Puna may not be the most pristine forest in Hawaii, but just 10% of the state...
