Bobby himself notes with wry pride: "I am the only candidate opposed by both big business and big labor." Many foreign diplomats, especially Asians, fear that he might lead the U.S. back to isolationism. Orthodox politicians often cannot forgive his hauteur, and recoil at what seems to be his rule-or-ruin approach. He is unpredictable, uncontrollable. Would he attack agricultural subsidies? Farm groups wonder. How far beyond Medicare would he go in expanding Government medical services? Organized medicine worries. He speaks for tax reform and attacks the oil-depletion allowance, as others have for years, but Bobby might just...
Genteel Banter. M.I.T. Humanities Professor Louis Kampf contends that many English teachers now recoil from stressing literature's illumination of life. They fear that voicing strong opinions is not only "a bad breach of manners," but might jeopardize their careers; thus confine themselves to "genteel banter." Historian Staughton Lynd, who has carried his beliefs into angry dissent from the Viet Nam war, criticizes historians who limit themselves to defining and analyzing forces in society. He asks acidly: "Should we be content with measuring the dimension of our prison instead of chipping, however inadequately, against the bars...
...moment he recovered from the jolt of his rifle's recoil, the Marine squinted once more through his sighting scope. Across the valley, he saw a black-uniformed Viet Cong crumple, as a bullet bludgeoned his chest. Just to make sure, the Marine pumped another round into the V.C. and watched the body twitch. The spotter put down his binoculars, took out a notebook, and recorded the details of the kill...
Last year, Walker and another colleague discovered what may prove to be an even more sensitive dating method-the measurement of alpha-particle tracks. Uranium nuclei frequently emit an alpha particle. As the particle is expelled, the nucleus recoils. Walker reasoned that "recoil tracks would be there, so I looked for them." He discovered that observable recoil tracks occurred 4,000 times more than fission tracks. When acid etching and track counting are perfected for alpha particles, the method should provide a means of dating infinitesimally small objects and those too young to have accumulated measurable amounts of fission tracks...
...with trouble-prone extraction and ejection devices, says Hough, the V-L system "eliminates a lot of your hardware and a lot of potential malfunction problems." Further, instead of giving the lead slug a "punch," as the powder-filled cartridge does, the propellant gives it a "shove," reducing both recoil and noise...
