Usage:

Against Princeton our recent record has been woeful indeed-four consecutive defeats in as many years. Although more successful against our Yale opponents, we are no longer looked upon as leaders in the art of argumentation, in which our pre-eminence had always been attributed to our acknowledged leadership in academic affairs. Certainly Harvard undergraduates are no less scholarly today than in the past; but they have lost sight of the splendid training that participation in an intercollegiate debate affords. Debating at Harvard is in a dangerous rut; its supporters are no longer representative of every side of Harvard activity...

...River. At the finish the second boat led the third by something less than half a length; the fourth boat was over a length behind the third. The time made was excellent, the course of nearly one and seven-eighths miles being covered in 9 minutes, 12 seconds. The record for the course is 9 minutes, 19 seconds; but as the crews on Saturday started a block nearer the finish than the full course requires, the time cannot be taken for a new record. All three crews rowed a good race; in fact there was very little difference in form...

...yard swims in fast time and finishing exceptionally strong in the relays, well ahead of McKinlay of Columbia and Kohn of the C. C. N. Y. team. His time of 1 minute in the 100-yard swim against Columbia is exceptionally fast and established a new record for the Morningside tank, as did also his performance in the 50 and 220-yard swims. The water polo team lost both games; it was overwhelmed by Columbia by the score of 7 to 0, and defeated by the C. C. N. Y. team, 2 to 1, in a close game requiring...

...first made, it was tagged with the statement that it was reasonable because it would affect so few. As a matter of fact it affected a great many. Probation itself became blunted and worm-eaten by this idiotic rule. Does a man who has made a successful record in the fall in both sports and studies find himself better off than his neighbor who has competed to the detriment of his courses? Not a whit. Doesn't it seem reasonable that a man who can keep off probation the year round, taking part in two sports, could as easily compete...

...more important contests of the spring, the team was undoubtedly at a considerable disadvantage. We are inclined to doubt the extent of injury that the rule has done, but here certainly is a specific instance of its harmful possibilities. Our contributor is right in stating that a man's record in his studies, and not his athletic record, should determine his eligibility to compete in any contest at any time of year...
