WINGING IT. United Airlines plans to hire 400 welfare recipients in slots from reservation clerks to cabin cleaners this year. The carrier has been using a nonprofit agency called GAIN (Greater Avenues to Independence) to recruit and train the newcomers, who earn from $5 to $10 an hour to start.
