...rays at so big a circle when the target is a rectangle only 1 in. by 1½ in. To keep the X rays from fanning out, they must be "collimated"-made to follow parallel paths. In their machine, the Nashville dentists use a stainless-steel plate with a rectangular window to accomplish collimation; they also use much more shielding and a steel bracket to hold the film just where it ought to be, without subjecting the patient's hand to radiation. The result, according to PHS tests, is a radiation dose delivered to the skin only one-half...
Like the voice, the verse is direct, fervent, fresh, almost childishly naive. Some of it is tenderly lyrical; much of it is vehemently public poetry, poetry for the microphone. The imagery and language are startling, precise, modern. "Behind an airplane," he writes, "the sound trailed/ Rectangular, like a barge behind a tug." And again: "Radio-like, my cat lies curled/ With his green eye tuned to the world...
...rose higher in the lunar sky and temperatures climbed toward 270° F. Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientists prepared to shut down their successful Surveyor spacecraft for a two-day siesta. Then they suddenly discovered that the protective shadows of Surveyor's solar panel and rectangular high-gain antenna had fallen over the television camera, keeping it cool enough to shoot pictures for an extra day. Before the camera was again directly exposed to the sun's rays and had to be turned off, Surveyor raised its picture total to an incredible 4,002. After the siesta...
...Happy Dungeon. Most recently built of Kahn's inventory (see opposite page) is his Salk Institute for Biological Studies, overlooking the Pacific palisades in La Jolla, Calif. Selected by Dr. Jonas Salk, developer of the polio vaccine, Kahn designed the presently half-occupied institute as two yoked rectangular blocks facing seaward. Each block is composed of flexible laboratory spaces, spanned by floor-tall Vierendeel trusses, which, like punched-out beams, permit the tons of laboratory plumbing to pass through. Separated from the labs by stairways and passageways that serve as open terraces for outdoor seminars are the angled studies...
Unlike most Ex directors who put props on the floor for a set and use the moveable black flats only to separate the playing area from whatever wing space is necessary, Babe and designer William Schroeder have built a small raised stage in the theatre, a rectangular room open to the audience on two sides. The Ex's seat-wagons are placed directly in front of the two open sides, so that the audience becomes in effect the two missing walls, and The Pelican thereby achieves intimacy and involves the audience. The conditions are close to ideal for Strindberg...
