...womanhood. Exquisite tension, indeed. Elsewhere, a man numbed by tragedy climbs out of himself by scaling an Alp. The purpose: to recapture his humanity "in a crucible of high drama." Humanity sinks in Letters from the "Samantha, " in which the captain of a British sailing vessel rescues a reddish ape from the Indian Ocean but throws it back when the sad, manlike creature disrupts ship's business. The captain insists that the ape had no meaning and his fate no moral significance. The reader should have no trouble getting the author's drift: when the freight must...

Inside the main building, we walked down long corridors, dimly lit by the grey light sifting in through high windows, toward classrooms and small studies. There was mahogany and cracked, reddish leather. The floor creaked grandly as we moved slowly around corners, fully expecting the current generation of the hereditary janitor class of the realm to leap out from a closet and drive us off with flailing push brooms. Every room seemed to have a fireplace, and we wondered what it would have been like to fall asleep in an over-stuffed armchair, Milton on your lap and a monogrammed...

For their voyage to the nether world, they were accompanied by such Egyptian burial adornments as seals and scarabs, solid-gold teardrop earrings, beads of gold and carnelian (reddish quartz), lotus-shaped alabaster goblets. The coffins even contained alabaster spoons, in the shape of a swimming girl, to apply cosmetics. Some of the seals bore the name of Ramses...

...workout list for the first day puts you at 7 a.m. so you set your alarm for six-fifteen. You wake up in an empty room, lit--a rare and not unwelcome sight--with the reddish-yellow of dawn. You stretch--your muscles are taut and sleek, perhaps the best shape you've been in ever--and put on your sweats. The morning air is cold, and you manage a jog down an empty Boylston Street. The boathouse looks strange lit from the east, but crews are already tying in as you cross Anderson bridge. A bright sunny...

Oddly enough, the lighter-skinned black male did not seem to feel so much prejudice toward the black black woman. It was no accident, I felt, that Mr. Harrison, the eighth-grade teacher, who was reddish-yellow himself, once protested to the science and math teacher about the fact that he always assigned sweeping duties to Doris and Ruby, two black black girls. Mr. Harrison said to them one day in the other teacher's presence, "You must be some bad girls. Every day I come down here you all are sweeping." The science and math teacher...
