...foreigners wished to cash in. But as foreigners piled up almost $50 billion in U.S. currency, while the U.S. gold stock melted to $10 billion, that pledge became hollow. Nixon gave it the coup de grâce on Aug. 15 by decreeing that the U.S. would no longer redeem foreign-held dollars for gold...
...only flaw in programming was the dull Bach Cantata No. 51. Not even a magnificent trumpet obbligato part could redeem the initial aria. Joan Heller, the soprano soloist,' has a beautiful voice remarkable for its evenness. Her diction was good and one could only wish for more variation in dynamics. It was a mistake to use a harpsichord against the full string body: Gerald Moshell pushed the instrument as much as possible and all it produced was a distracting non-tonal jangle. This interesting fact always led to a brief apology from my interviewer for being a liberal arts major. In an attempt to redeem liberal arts, my interviewer told me the suspense-filled story of "The Tiger and the Lady." Then I was told that the story of the tiger and the lady had the impact or even substance of talking about X-ray analysis. I regret that the acute importance of cocktail chatter had to be shown...
