...actors at the Loeb become little more than menials on stage, pushing about various inanimate objects in time to the music. Only a couple of performances have much character--Paul Redford's cigar-chewing Loge and Grace Shohet's teasing Brunnhilde stand out. This is one show where the technical crew deserves more credit than the performers; Eric Cornwell's lighting, Antony Rudie's technical direction, and Jennifer Schreiber's stage-managing must all be epic efforts...
...Deep, most people dismissed Nick Nolte as a dumb blonde pretty-boy, a poor man's Robert Redford. But Nolte's not as dumb as he looks, and that's his fortune--always managing to act one notch more sensitive and intelligent than you think he's capable of. That's not much, and he gets away with a lot, until his "big" scene at the end of the movie, when he emotes and rocks and gesticulates like a marionette and babbles in an elaborately whiny voice. Mostly, though, he's pretty good--funny, spirited, with a tongue-in-cheek...
Andrew Borowitz seems admirably suited for the part of Rodrigo, the circus acrobat turned informer, although at times his lines are inaudible; Maura Moynihan is uncannily boyish as his male sidekick. One of the best cameos is Paul Redford's chilling portrayal of Jack. He is authentically sinister in a horrifying last scene...
Claudio is meant to be a dullard aristocrat, insensitive and unpoetic--his highest flights of imagination produce feeble lines like Redford's sulky performance is sufficiently imperceptive but occasionally mannered, Shohet's graceful but hard to judge, since she has so few lines...
