...most interesting was a sitcom (NBC's only new one scheduled for fall), My Name Is Earl. Jason Lee plays a "redneck" -Reilly's word, and frankly an accurate one -petty thief who wins $100,000 in the lottery, gets hit by a car, has a spiritual experience involving Carson Daly and decides to make amends for every bad thing he's done. The feel is very Raising Arizona, and it's anyone's guess if red-state viewers will laugh or be offended, but at least NBC has made a sitcom about people who don't drink merlot...

Along with its characteristic redneck riffs, Captain Maximus provides a surprising counterpoint. The last and longest of the eight stories has nothing at all to do with the South. Subtitled "An Idea for Film," Power and Light jumps and pans and crosscuts its way around Seattle. Hardworking women come intermittently into focus. Polly Buck, for example, labors at the City Lights Powerhouse: "This girl is chaining your breakfast together, citizen. She is hitching the light up for your asinine patio party, your old starlight teevee movies, your electric toothbrush, vibrator, Magic Fingers." Maureen, a black woman who supports her heroin...

The campaign will be so intense that Miramax will purchase covers of magazines as diverse as Vanity Fair and Redneck Trucker to place “For Your Consideration” ads. They will include a quote from Variety that reads, “Miramax and Froehlich have outdone themselves. Only next year when The Good-Willed English Patient who Goes to Chicago and Climbs a Cold Mountain comes...

...with model looks, and rising star Vickers, a self-styled metrosexual, embody an emerging racing demographic. They're "fun, accessible, youthful," says a Garnier rep, perfect for the 18-to-34-year-olds who account for almost a third of NASCAR's audience. "It used to be considered a redneck sport. It's come a long way," says Vickers. But good ole boys need not fear. "NASCAR won't lose its heritage," Vickers says. Only now there's help for drivers with helmet head. --By Jeninne Lee--St. John

...anti-Republican propaganda in Fahrenheit 9/11? Fox News unabashedly spews anti-Democratic invective daily, so why the deep concern about one movie? Right-wingers dish it out with impunity, but they are certainly whining about Moore's response. The world beyond U.S. borders recognizes the transparent absurdity of this redneck posturing. At least half of all Americans undoubtedly cringe at the loss of respect and dignity the U.S. suffers on the global stage because of the embarrassingly blind arrogance of its political right. At home Moore may be a thorn in Bush's side, but around the world the filmmaker...
