Once such words would have been identified, and uncharitably patronized, as the essence of Southern redneck religion. But they were uttered last week at a thoroughly Episcopal church in Darien, Conn.,.an almost stereotypically proper and affluent Northeastern suburb. The speaker, Lee Buck, 54, is a senior vice president of the New York Life Insurance Co. "Before, I wanted to be successful in the world," says Buck. "Now I want to exalt the Lord. I want to stay a businessman, but I want people to know that God changes lives. You don't drop out of the world because...

...FINE Dan Jenkins novel this movie is loosely based on, the prefix semi- attached to an adjective was a sort of redneck oi vey-- thus semi-tough meant very tough indeed. Novels rarely come to the screen with the exact story line of the printed book--Jenkins described his trials with the screenplay in a recent Sports Illustrated article--but director Michael Ritchie has loaded up the old story of two country boys (and one country girl) who come to the city and make good with New York cocktail party jokes, including a sometimes flat parody of Erhardt...

...have laughed off Billy. No one has to suspect Billy of anything -he simply takes a certified check, in advance, then goes out behind the microphone, usually clutching a cold one, and exhales his ineffable magic: one-liners, snorts ("hee-unh, hee-unh"), the buffooneries of a quick-witted redneck (self-advertised). "I ain't the Carter that won't tell a lie," says Billy...
