...News. Franken?s radio show was originally called The O?Franken Factor, with the simple aim of annoying O?Reilly and provoking a lawsuit from him. It?s a pleasant irony that, for all his importance in lowering the level of TV?s political discourse to barrier reef depths, O?Reilly?s lasting legacy may be that he diverted the careers of two men: one (Al Franken) who could become a U.S. Senator, and another (Stephen Colbert) whose parody of The Factor has earned him a huge fan base and, after his fearless speech of the White House Press Corps...
...person. The Island Sky is a small expedition ship that departs from Mauritius, taking 100 passengers on 12-day-long cruises on these turquoise waters. Wading ashore on Aldabra, home to the world's largest population of giant tortoises, the welcome party is a shoal of blacktip reef sharks patrolling the shallows. The depths are even more spectacular, with a marine metropolis of coral and tropical fish. In the 1960s, Britain and the U.S. wanted Aldabra for a nuclear test site, but environmental pressure groups thwarted their plans. It's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and only 1,500 human visitors are allowed per year. But be warned: there's still crime. Frigate birds, the pirates of the skies, steal their fish from red-footed boobies. Catch this high-flying...
Some time ago, the Wall Street Journal reported that Tom Clancy had gone as ballistic as a Red October submarine-launched missile because the director who was turning one of Clancy's novels into a movie placed a reef in the middle of the (reefless) Chesapeake Bay for plot reasons. Thinking back on the account of this Sturm und Drang in a teacup, I thought, Dude, count your blessings. The movie version of one of my novels had just run aground again, not in the Chesapeake but somewhere in the middle of that reef and wreck-strewn seascape known...
