Speaking in the Kirkland House Junior Common Room, Reeves said that "people are challenging the idea that the central state should have the power to tell others how to run their lives."
Citing a Defense Department statement, Reeves noted that 60 per cent of all draftees, as opposed to 20 per cent of volunteers, are now exposed to combat risks.
Tom Reeves, director of the National Council to Repeal the Draft, said last night that "there is a realistic chance of repealing the draft" in view of the wide-ranging agreement across the political spectrum on this issue.
"This is the first time a natural eclipse has passed over an established rocket range with all the established support facilities-the radar, weather prediction, telemetry, and ground crews-which you don't get when you do the job quick and dirty," Reeves said.
"If you just sit down and rationally calculate the chances of success [10-20 per cent] you really wonder why you do it. But it is such a unique opportunity that we can't avoid trying for it," Reeves said.
