...acknowledge that the first incident was clearly offensive, we are likely to question the dean's concern about the latter event. By linking the two, is she not trivializing racism? After all, no offense was intended by referring to the 1950s as a "care-free" era. Must we always mention Jim Crow when we refer to a pre-1970 decade...
...decision was not the occasion of much debate at first. After all, it seemed ridiculous to refer to the head of our editorial board as Chairman when she was, in fact, a woman. And besides, what relevance does a person's gender have to their capacity to do the job? But after the box appeared, there was criticism. It followed the lines which have become all too familiar. Does everything have to be an issue? The Crimson has finally lost its independence and is now a slave to modish opinion...
...narrative does a complicated backbend, for instance, in order to refer to a Russian restaurant in London named "the Sutky (so called because it was open day and night)." This comes at a point weighty with literary allusions to Crime and Punishment, so the reader suspects hidden meanings and looks up sutky. No allusions here; all it means is "a day and a night." Marvelous; now we know another Russian word. Perhaps the scraps in Welsh, Turkish, Greek and Hebrew offer magical insights, perhaps not. The suspicion is that they are simply authentic sound effects. You skip them...
...sufficiently distinguishing the interests and means of action of various groups in what Sharfstein collectively refers to as the "animal rights movement," Sharstein's insensitivity further promotes the misunderstandings to which he himself has succumbed. The actions of certain radical groups may be considered deplorable, but this should not be allowed to influence one's judgement of the philosophies and intentions of non-violent groups, such as PETA, which constitute the vast majority of the "movement." The $400 which PETA spent in rescuing lobsters, which Sharfstein suggests could have been used more productively, is less than what many students probably...
Supposedly, Hirsch weeded out specialized entries by using a formula of selecting only events, people or things that major newspapers would refer to without a definition. (Under that rationale, many of Hirsch's entries are extremely questionable.) The science entries, compiled by Trefil, are exempt from this qualification, since "there is little broad knowledge of science even among educated people." Granted, but does one need to know what thermal inversion is in order to function as a literate member of society? Similarly, would a science major feel a driving need to recognize that John Constable was an artist...
