This may be an extreme position, but there is ample evidence that the bottom-line mentality is taking over. HMOs refer to the proportion of premiums they pay out for patient care as their "medical-loss ratio"--a chilling choice of words. The Association of American Medical Colleges reported last November that medical-loss ratios of for-profit HMOs paying a flat fee to doctors for treatment averaged only 70% of their premium revenue. The remaining 30% went for administrative expenses--and profit. Other surveys have yielded less alarming figures, and even among profit-making HMOs, there is a wide...

...chaste maiden, distinguished for piety or steadfastness in religion." The OED's second definition of virgin as "a woman (esp. a young woman) who is, or remains, in a state of inviolate chastity; an absolutely pure maiden or maid" is similarly gender specific. In fact, the dictionary does not refer to the possibility of male virginity until the sixth definition, when it admits that a virgin is a person of either...

...aware that most of the points of confusion and interest brought out in the articles and letters are addressed in the Guide, so I thought this would be a good time to remind students of this easy resource for most questions about the Board. Rather than simply refer him to the Guide, though, I'd like to respond to some of Mr. Berger's particular concerns. This past summer, I worked as an instructor and residential adviser at a sleepaway camp for children aged nine through 12. I encountered many children who had been diagnosed with ADD and ADHD, most of whom were taking Ritalin. "Brad," as I will refer to him in this column, had been diagnosed with a particularly severe case of ADHD, and was correspondingly receiving heavy doses of medication, including Ritalin after breakfast and a sleep-inducing pill before...

Please stop using the term guerrillas to refer to members of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement [WORLD, Jan. 20]. Anyone with minimal insight on what has been going on in Peru for the past few years knows that the appropriate term is terrorist or narcoterrorist. As opposed to other revolutionary movements in Latin America, the Tupac Amaru has no popular support whatsoever, and has never controlled any territories in Peru. It is sad to realize how in Latin America, chanting Marxist nonsense seems to justify planting bombs, kidnapping, selective assassination and extortion. People who in the U.S. would be considered...
