...attitude seems to prevail in the Harvard administration that high academic standards and a winning football team are simply impossible of reconciliation. They need reflect but a moment to see that this is not a unique theory: the University of Chicago abandoned intercollegiate athletic competition some years back, and I see no tangible proof of greater academic strides since then. Obviously, I do not propose that it is possible to assemble eleven Barry Woods or Whizzer Whites. ...discussion of the indenture clause brings up the further question of the distribution of physicians. Though the AMA's figures probably reflect the consideration that there is an adequate supply of doctors, they do not consider how well those doctors are spread. While the supply of physicians in a city like New York is generally 3 to 4 times as great than the national average, some rural areas have only one doctor for every 1500 or 2000 people...
...only things that jumped up appreciably in the 1951 budget are the appropriations for education and natural resources. The impetus for the first comes from the 300 million dollars for aid to education that the President hopes to get by Congress this session, while increased allocations for natural resources reflect the stepped-up program for atomic energy development...
