...AUTO-MOTION PICTURES ALSO REFLECT newer media. Car films are today's video games. And vice versa. Virtual rides like the Grand Theft Auto games (including Vice City) and the Gran Turismo series have sat on best-of lists. They're also helpful aids to directorial research. John Singleton says he played hours of Turismo while preparing 2 Fast 2 Furious. He put the Nissan Skyline (which isn't sold in the U.S. and had to be imported from Japan) and the Mitsubishi Evo VII in the movie because they're in Turismo. "We wanted to get the cars that...

...Unlike sunscreen, which falls under the FDA's watch, sun-protective clothing is largely unregulated. Even so, the industry has its own voluntary standards. The weave in sun-protective clothing is extra tight, so ultraviolet rays can't penetrate. Some companies treat fabric with chemicals that reflect or absorb UV beams, in several cases using the same compounds that keep car seats from fading. ...initiative on aids is being fueled by a bizarre and peculiarly American alliance. Where else could an aggressively self-confident and largely gay activist community find common purpose with the Christian right? Different aspects of the bill reflect the concerns of such disparate groupings as Act Up, the Abstinence Clearinghouse, drugmaker Merck and Co. and the Catholic Medical Mission Board. The aids consensus came about in part because scripture readings with Bono and the grassroots take-up of the Jubilee movement for debt relief have helped change the religious right's take on aids in the developing world: what...

...course he has recruited old reggae stalwarts such as Sly & Robbie and Susan Cadogan, but the far-flung artists who have answered Perry's call aren't locked into one sound; if they reflect anything, it is his pioneering studio techniques, which have seeped almost unnoticed into many areas of popular music: Macy Gray's stoned soul bumps up against Perry's scattershot sounds; British electro-DJ samplers Coldcut go head-to-head with him in an "audiovisual clash"; Chicago minimalists Tortoise let the man loose on their mixing desk; and Skin, late of Skunk Anansie, heads an all-star...
