President of the Undergraduate Council (UC) Matthew L. Sundquist ’09 has been appointed to serve on the committee to review and recommend reforms to the Administrative Board, a committee that was established by Dean of the College David R. Pilbeam in January. With this appointment, Sundquist takes on what is ostensibly the most important student administrative role in recent memory. We hope that Sundquist, as our top elected student representative, makes full use of his influence to recommend changes to the committee, with a particular eye toward the interests of the student population. Sundquist has a record...
...Callie Shell's photograph of Obama captured a frightening reality of his campaign. Obama sits confidently consumed in his work, his feet resting atop the table. One imagines he's pondering new considerations for health care, reading aides' suggestions for education reform or reflecting on the commonalities of the American voter. But a closer look shows a copy of his best seller, The Audacity of Hope, at his heels. Why the need to have a book he wrote so close by? Sarafa ’09 made Ad Board reform a central focus of their campaign for the Council’s top spots in December, citing a lack of transparency and student representation as two of its major flaws. Last semester, the UC formed its Ad Board review committee, which includes both UC representatives and other students, to seek a student voice...
...Stephen Hildreth, an expert in missile defense for the Congressional Research Service, addressing the same hearing of the House government reform committee's national-security panel, emphasized the epic technological challenge involved in building a nuclear-tipped, ocean-spanning missile. In the past half-century, only five nations - the U.S., Britain, China, France and Russia - have managed to successfully develop, and then integrate, the requisite propulsion, guidance, reentry and warhead systems. "The long history of ICBMs demonstrates that such success took considerable resources in time, funding, knowledge, infrastructure, organization and national commitment," Hildreth said. "It's this aspect...
