Marley sometimes drops his refusenik anarchism. Take for instance the 1976 elections. Michael Manley, the socialist leader, talked Marley into giving a free concert in his behalf. Three days before the concert Marley was relaxing in his mansion-commune with the whole band, friends, family and hangers-on, when two cars drove up and unloaded several men armed with sub-machine guns and automatic pistols. A bullet grazed Rita Marley's head as she tried to escape with five children in tow. One gunman, a young and jittery kid of about sixteen, pointed his weapon at Marley and sprayed...
...Shcharansky's, a full-scale treason charge is trumped up in addition to "anti-Soviet agitation," the charge used against Ginzburg, Petkus and Yuri Orlov. Jewish dissidents whose crime is to apply for an exit visa are sometimes caught in a Catch-22. Fired from their jobs, these "refuseniks" become liable to parasitism laws if they refuse to accept menial work. "Malicious hooliganism" laws round up other dissidents. In one hooliganism case, Refusenik Vladimir Slepak was convicted after hanging outside his apartment a banner demanding the right to leave the country...
Another show trial of a refusenik is scheduled this month in Leningrad. The accused is Vladimir Maramzin, who is charged with disseminating his "anti-Soviet" writings; in fact, he is the author of nonpolitical books for children. If convicted, Maramzin is subject to possibly seven years' imprisonment. Maramzin was arrested last July, right after he visited a Soviet visa office where he applied for emigration to Israel. The secret police arrived in his apartment just as he was beginning to fill out the application forms...
