...most influential politician in Texas history. Fourteen years after his death, Texas politics is still dominated by Rayburn proteges like John Connally, Lloyd Bentsen and others of the same ilk--practical, adaptable men who relish the exercise of power for its own sake and maintain a highly skeptical regard for principles and ideologies...

...been easier to forge a SALT II pact with the Soviets if Schlesinger had remained Secretary of Defense. Though the two men differed fundamentally about détente (see page 20), Kissinger respected Schlesinger's intellect and feels they would have reached a compromise. In contrast, Kissinger has no great regard for Rumsfeld. The Soviets have rejected the latest U.S. position on SALT, and Kissinger fears he must wait until Rumsfeld is confirmed, probably early next year, before finishing work on a new negotiating proposal. Beyond that, the Administration may feel the need to take a tougher position to show conservatives...

The insult was compounded by Governor Hugh Carey, who also declined to see Sadat. Then when he arrived at the U.N., he was greeted by cries of "Down with Sadat! Long live Palestine!" from Palestinian sympathizers on Dag Hammarskjold Plaza...

The latter statement is quite literally true for a growing coterie of young American converts, who regard the South Korean cult leader (TIME, Sept. 30, 1974) as the second Christ. Asking no questions, they obediently hawk candy and flowers, raising millions to spread the faith. They exist on a shoestring, while Moon, 55, lives in lordly fashion in a 25-room mansion in New York's Westchester County...
