With all of this in mind, it would still be a mistake to regard the demonstrations as futile efforts, even if the Corporation's decision seems unalterable. The week of protest--the initial demonstration, the week-long vigil, and the torchlight parade--should provide added encouragement for similar movements at other schools. Because of the media attention such large demonstrations receive, public awareness of the anti-apartheid movement is bound to increase...

...clearly, with regard to students, "persuasion" is an empty word. While calm dialogue with administrators is useful, and should continue in the future, it is only naive for students to expect much to come of such exchanges--at least as long as administrators bring to them the kind of defensive, uncommunicative attitude that characterized Presidents Bok's walk through the demonstration of April 24 and his address to Quincy House seniors the following Monday. While it is impossible to predict the shape of Harvard's anti-apartheid movement in the fall, students must not acquiesce to the April decision...

...really hard to generalize. I do honestly feel at times--and I know in some ways I've contributed to this--that students come in here and regard me as only a secretary, someone who doesn't have to be taken seriously. Their attitude is hard to handle because they tend to think, 'Only Dean Epps can handle my problem, I should obviously be sent right in to see him.' Although most rents are at the market level, Harvard owns an estimated $8 million worth of tax-exempt property in Cambridge, and makes a $507,000 in-lieu-of-tax payment. The situation in Boston is similar, except that Harvard pays no in-lieu-of-tax payment there and the value of exempt property is twice as high--an estimated $16 million. Harvard has not yet decided whether the corporation will handle Boston properties. The most publicized complaints, from Boston Fair Share and Cambridge community...

Another issue involved in the Truong-Humphrey case is the future of American relations with Vietnam. Carter may pledge a commitment to human rights elsewhere in the globe; with regard to the nation that we bombed and delohated in the name of democracy, however, the lofty rhetoric is abandoned. Truong and Humphrey's trial may be interpreted by the Vietnamese government as a clear indication that the United States is neither ready nor willing to normalize relations, nor is our government willing to consider the payment of reparations...
