...Beacon Cup has been a College rowing trophy for almost 50 years, although it has been several times neglected for a number of years. It appears to have been first offered in 1858, as a prize for the "Beacon Cup Regatta", in which a Harvard crew won from seven others in a three-mile race. In 1866 the cup was made the annual challenge prize for the winners of the spring class races. Work for the majority of class and Freshman crews reached a climax on Saturday in the Annual Spring Regatta. Twenty crews took part in the events, the class championship being won by the first sophomore crew. In the race between the Yale and Columbia freshman crews the latter were defeated by two lengths, the official time being 4 minutes, 43 seconds for the 7-8 mile course. Arrangements have practically been completed to send two crews to the American Henley regatta on the Schuylkill River, Philadelphia, on Saturday, May 26. The winning crew in the interclass races on May 18 will row in the race for university class crews and the University second crew will row in the race for second university crews. Several other universities will probably be represented in these races. The two crews, with one substitute each, and G. Last year Harvard was represented for the first time in the American Henley regatta. Then the 1908 Freshman crew which had previously won the class races won the race for second eight-oared crews and the University four-oar finished second in a race for four-oar shells. By entering the University second crew instead of a four-oar this year a strong eight-oar crew, in addition to the Freshmen, will be kept intact for the University eight to row against after the Cornell race.
