...Regent Erwin, who was appointed to the board by Governor John Connally in 1963, is a rich, 50-year-old Austin lawyer, a longtime crony of Lyndon Johnson's, and a former Democratic National Committeeman. He is now emperor of the University of Texas. His idea of a great university is one where teachers teach, students study and regents govern at his direction. His strict construction of those views has kept him at constant odds with students and faculty...
That decision was not likely to be final. There are outspoken dissenters among the regents themselves. Said Fred Dutton, a liberal regent, of the majority decision. "The Angela Davis charade is a con game to mislead the people of this state." Moreover, a majority of students and faculty members has lined up on Angela's side. U.C.L.A.'s academic senate, composed solely of faculty members, expressing "our shock, our dismay, our rage," voted to defy the regents by taking steps to keep Miss Davis on the faculty...
...Miss Davis, citing resolutions going back to 1940 that barred Communists from the faculty. While Miss Davis kept on teaching, Governor Reagan and his not-so-Silent Majority of regents mounted a campaign of invective, to which she vigorously responded in kind. If Young decides to reappoint her, says conservative Regent John Canaday, "all hell's going to break loose...

Regent Roy V. Harris, editor of the racist Augusta Courier and state chairman of George Wallace's American Independent Party, led the assault on Rusk's policies and qualifications. But Harris' blasts were not really aimed at the policies that have made Rusk persona non grata among liberals in the North. His target was Rusk's liberalism...
...General Faculty of the university held a special meeting at which they adopted a resolution harshly condemning Erwin for his general actions during his term as Regent and especially for his behavior at the "Battle of Waller Creck." If he refused to resign, it said, the faculty would institute impeachment proceedings against him in the Texas legislature. That is a nice gesture, but it probably won't work because Erwin is so powerful in Texas. He was a successful lawyer who became a crony of LBJ and Connally, and rose with them. Connally appointed him a Regent...
