...blind viewers to the controversies, which at times seemed louder than the songs. In March, Eurovision officials formally disinvited Georgia from participating because its entry, "We Don't Want to Put In," seemed to mock Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in the wake of the conflict in the breakaway region of South Ossetia. On May 15, the chief of the Russian jury withdrew after he was spotted enjoying a caviar lunch with eventual winner Rybak in Moscow, potentially compromising his impartiality. ...dwindled to almost nothing, the town still has an unemployment rate of about 14%, double that in the old West Germany. And as a new economic crisis strikes - this time a global one - Halle isn't immune. Its economy has crashed in the past six months. Across the region - but especially in places like the town of Eisenach, where a new auto industry has been built up over the past few years - the latest downturn is biting, though local officials stress that at least their position is better now than it was. It's far easier to use than a conventional stopper - no struggling to hold the heavy bottle as you twist, no worrying that you'll take someone's eye out with the cork - but it still delivers that satisfying pop upon opening. It's a minirevolution...

"International security is increasingly threatened by the truly inadequate existing global and regional security architecture, as well as international legal instruments and mechanisms for its security," the paper reads. "Particularly evident is the failure of the security architecture in the Euro-Atlantic region, represented mainly by NATO and the OSCE." At the same time, it slams U.S. foreign policy without actually calling out the U.S. by name, claiming that Russia?s military security is jeopardized ?by the efforts...
