The German and British governments are still in talks with GM over potential aid for the U.S. automaker's beleaguered European subsidiaries, Opel in Germany and Vauxhall in the U.K. GM says it needs some $4.2 billion to save its businesses in the region. ...Asia's favorite customer--the American consumer--is drastically cutting back. Consumer spending in the U.S. dropped at a rate of 4.3% in the fourth quarter of 2008, the steepest quarterly decline since 1980. Because roughly 25% of Asia's exports ultimately end up in the U.S., the region's manufacturing powerhouses are helpless to counteract this crash. Trade among Asian countries is also plummeting, since much of this intraregional commerce is indirectly dependent on the West. A high percentage of Taiwan's trade with China, for example, is made up of electronic components shipped to Chinese factories for assembly...

...least until Serbia agrees to at least a de facto recognition of Kosovo’s independence and Kosovo can govern itself without the assistance of NATO forces deployed there. Nevertheless, the EU can and should play its own role in shaping the politics of this region by showing Kosovo and Serbia that it intends to extend EU membership to both of them when they are ready. Tokaji, sheltered by the foothills of the Carpathian mountains, has a singularly balmy microclimate. Long, warm autumns combined with the humidity of the Bodrog and Tisza Rivers favor the development of noble rot - much as in Sauternes. Unsurprisingly, the French have a presence in the region. AXA Millésimes - the winemaking subsidiary of the AXA insurance company - is behind Disznókó, the largest and arguably the most forward-looking single-estate Tokaj producer. The label is pioneering a fresher, crisper, more elegantly structured and less oxidized style of Tokaj that ages better in the bottle. Aymeric...
