...Anna State Hospital. In a ward of 46 chronic female schizophrenics and mental defectives, they exposed patients to the pleasures of cigarettes, television, a choice of roommates, social events and even walks around the hospital grounds. Then they announced that, henceforth, patients would have to "buy" everything except regular meals, a bed in the least desirable room and their prescribed medicines. They could earn metal "tokens" to make purchases simply by demonstrating normal behavior. Attendants then began handing out tokens for the largest amount of useful behavior that each patient could manage at the time...

When Lola first meets the King his room is filled with depth, but each spot in it is exactly limted and structured by the regular columns which rise from floor to ceiling, by the regular wall-cornicing in the background, by the desk and steps which divide up the spacious floor. The two figures in this setting are not isolated, but not confined either. The integration of space and characters is perfect; its thematic parallel is the relation of these two personalities; strong yet subtle, passionate and deep yet completely controlled. Nevertheless Lola is in a desperate situation...

The remainder, those who don't teach at Harvard during the winter, are recommended for Summer School appointments by the Harvard departments. And many of this second group either received graduate degrees from Harvard, or taught here at one time or another as junior or senior Faculty members...
