There are exceptions. Political Writer Richard Reeves earns more than $100,000 a year, Diplomatic Expert Tad Szulc makes about $80,000, and Sportswriter Bil Gilbert grosses more than $40,000. But the big moneymakers almost always have some kind of cushion.
