...outs is everyone’s favorite scantily clad diva of age, Mariah Carey. After a bizarre strip show on TRL and numerous accounts of getting silenced by her publicist, the rumored paramour of Eminem left the ramblings of a crazy on her fan site before checking into a rehab center. Her publicist has since assured fans that she was merely suffering from “extreme exhaustion” and those bandages were simply the result of “accidentally” cutting herself with glass. But she was only one of many worn out stars this summer...
...played an alcoholic on the road to recovery in the movie Bounce. Maybe it wasn't all acting? Last week square-jawed Pearl Harbor star BEN AFFLECK revealed he had entered rehab for an alcohol problem. Said publicist David Pollick: "Ben is a self-aware and smart man who has decided that a fuller life awaits him without alcohol. Having been a therapist for adolescents in a rehab program, I can say marijuana is not the innocuous drug Ehrenreich considers it to be. Marijuana is a significant problem for employers, individuals and society as a whole. Impaired motor skills and judgment, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, antisocial behavior and psychological addiction may all be related to marijuana use. BRET J. HERROD Highlands Ranch, Colo...
...largest experiment of all, California voters last November passed Proposition 36. Modeled after a vanguard policy in Arizona (see box), it is expected to divert some 100,000 first- and second-time drug offenders from prisons into rehab over the next three years. "California's Proposition 36 highlights the disgust many feel for our current system," says Rocky Anderson, the Democratic mayor of Salt Lake City, Utah, which has been dealing with a spate of heroin overdose deaths. "Punitive policies, at tremendous taxpayer expense, are an unmitigated failure." Anderson and like-minded officials are sending a message to the White...
