...entertaining is Captain EO? Pretty entertaining, actually. The first half of the film is an energetic rehash of the Star Wars space battle. The second half is an elaborate Michael Jackson video, in which the star emerges from his rickety spaceship to do battle with the Evil Empress, played with magisterial malevolence by Oscar Winner Anjelica Huston (Prizzi's Honor). Jackson, who by now could double for his own Tussaud waxwork, is an improbable Han Solo, but he still dances like a jive Astaire and earned audible swoons from teenage girls at the premiere. The film's 3-D effects...
...Baltimore's Little Italy last week, the early morning breakfasters at the Sandwich King took a break from their rehash of the Orioles game to greet a familiar face. "Morning, Senator," one man called from the counter. The title was premature, but it sounded good to Congresswoman Barbara Mikulski, who had just won the Democratic nomination for the Senate by beating Maryland Governor Harry Hughes and Representative Michael Barnes. Maryland's Republican nominee for the Senate, meanwhile, was celebrating her primary victory south of the Capital Beltway with a well-known admirer. Linda Chavez was spending some time away from...
...disk itself is a typical example of pseudo-punk synth-pop. "Motion" moves nicely, and the apocalyptyic "Guillotine Day," among other tracks, finds Amphlett attempting to mimic ex-Sex Pistol John Lydon. The result, however, is far closer to a Pat Benatar rehash than something new. Lyrics again center on love and relationships, and are generally rather mundane...
...record itself is permeated with gross misuse and abuse of synthesizers. The fervent pounding of ex-drummer Topper Headon has been replaced on many tracks by ineptly programmed drum machines. The rhythm tracks as a whole are little more than another inept rehash of mainstream British synth-pop. Even Strummer's sharp-edged guitar which figured so prominently on the band's early works, has lost its character, now grinding like a Husker Du album played into a feather pillow. It is generally accepted that Strummer has no vocal talent, and this record provides precious little evidence to the contrary...
...Jeannot Szwarc, with the blood of "Jaws II" already on his hands, is carrying out his own niche as a hatchetman of promising sequels. Given a cast of the most talented hams in Hollywood, he squeezes as bland a performance as possible from each one. Dunaway is left to rehash the residue of her Joan Crawfordisms from "Mommy Dearest," charging through some genuinely funny lines with the comic timing...
