...course the Old Lady's purse was not plump one morning and lean the next. Such epochal movements of gold bullion are necessarily slow. All summer airplanes have been hopping off gold-laden from England. Many winged to Germany, attracted by legitimate opportunities for high return offered in the Reich, where the discount rate of the Reichsbank stood at 7½%, a potent magnet. But even more gold planes sped to France, and that was passing strange. With the Bank of France's rate at 3½%, the zeal of that institution to acquire and hold gold bullion was regarded in London...

Last week Germany's Reichstag and Ministry of Justice, bold in their new republicanism, seriously considered legalizing death by professional prescription. Advocates argued that euthanasia has become common in the Reich. Opponents pointed out that no one man has the moral balance to decide on another's death. It apparently did not occur to the German debaters last week that lethal decisions, before the act, might be left to a jury of physicians or to a court...

Nearly everyone in the U. S. wants to believe, does believe, that Germany is prosperous and can pay the sums demanded of her in Reparations (see Inter-national). The majority may be right again, but last week some very pessimistic information about the Reich was vouchsafed by an expert known to have the ear and confidence of U. S. President Herbert Hoover. He has just returned from a series...

...session of the Second Dawes Committee (TIME, Feb. 18, et seq.) the creditor powers presented Germany with a grand total reparations bill of $28,000,000,000, payable over 58 years.* Since the people of Germany roughly number 60,000,000, each man, woman, child and babe in the Reich is faced with a reparations debt of $466. Even in the U. S. there are babes to whom $466 is quite a pot of money. Still, to a really potent babe (born yesterday and with 58 years in which to grow up paying on the installment plan), even...

Hitherto Germany's representative−her famed "Iron Man," Dr. Hjalmar Schacht, president of the Reichsbank−had hung doggedly to $332,000,000 as the greatest sum the Reich could possibly pay. Last week, however, he appeared so struck by the figure $420,000,000 that, clapping on a Hamburg hat and greatcoat, he caught the Nord Express for Germany...
