...first sight, the Bush team does not make us feel the same way. Don Imus once likened Clinton's cabinet to the bar crowd in Star Wars (think Janet Reno, Robert Reich and Donna Shalala). While not intending to be complimentary (seeing as how several members of said bar crowd are not technically human), the description fits. We can envision one of Clinton appointees and immediately laugh, cry or just plain gawk...
...that can often distort their meaning in the popular imagination. Ask American high school kids today about the reasons for World War II, and they'll probably tell you it had something to do with Hitler and the Jews. (In fact, the fate of the Jews under the Third Reich had no bearing whatsoever on the strategic decision-making of both Hitler and his Allied foes throughout...
Suddenly, Wilson's narrative jumps away from this unhappy family and back to 1941 Berlin, where an industrialist named Klaus Felsen is being persuaded, none too gently, to abandon his railroad-coupling factory and take on an important assignment for the Nazis. The Third Reich needs vast amounts of wolfram, i.e., tungsten, to use as an alloy in solid-core ammunition, essential for tank warfare, and the present supply from China will cease once Hitler breaks his nonaggression pact with Stalin. And for those in New York City over winter break, the band will play at the legendary CBGB's club (315 Bowery St.) on Dec. 26 and at the Sidewalk Cafe (94 Avenue A) on Dec. 27. (Damn, and there I was thinking I was being cool by spending part of winter break in Iceland.) Visit www.ensimismada.com for more details or to hear their songs...
Ensimismada features Julia Jarcho '03, Harry Kimball '03 and Zeke Reich '03, along with Stanford sophomore Michael Frank. The band, then named Quill, was formed during the members' high school days in New York City in the summer of 1997. X&O is the third album released by Ensimismada, following 1998's Dam! A Semi-Sin, and 1999's self-titled Ensimismada EP. At just under 15 minutes of music, X&O is pleasing to the ear, combining a steady drum/bass/guitar sound with the vocals of Frank, Kimball and Jarcho. In general, the lyrics flow together well: while some appear...
