April 1942. A U.S. submarine is camouflaged as a German U-boat in a zany scheme to capture the Reich's Enigma code. Flouting all rules of the sea but honoring every war-epic cliche about guts under pressure, Lieut. Matthew McConaughey and his team give a demonstration of old-fashioned mechanical virtuosity--of people doing difficult things well, including things they never thought they could. The sub is really a time machine: this brisk, not-quite-plausible thriller returns us to a time when men were men and movies were shorter...

LENI RIEFENSTAHL has an almost Faustian knack for survival. The infamous German filmmaker, who directed the 1934 Nazi propagandist film Triumph of the Will, weathered World War II and the international ostracism that resulted from her association with the Third Reich. Now 97, she suffered relatively minor injuries last week when a helicopter in which she was riding crashed in the Sudan. She is being treated in Germany for a few broken ribs. Riefenstahl was in Africa to revisit the Nuba tribe, which she photographed during the 1970s, a project that drew criticism for its perceived objectification of tribe members...

...stranglehold of the "complexity boys" (as critic-composer Virgil Thomson called them) was challenged by such older American tonalists as David Diamond and Ned Rorem and weakened in the '80s by the deliberately repetitive music of Philip Glass and Steve Reich. But minimalism has proved too simple-minded to satisfy serious listeners hungry for accessible yet challenging new scores. Liebermann, Daniel Asia, Jorge Martin, Paul Moravec and George Tsontakis were among the first younger composers to snub its stuttering chatter in favor of a full-blooded style that is at once unmistakably contemporary (Liebermann, for instance, was influenced...

...despite unprecedented international pressure to keep Jorg Haider's Freedom party out of government. President Thomas Klestil Thursday agreed to swear in a coalition government Friday comprising the mainstream conservative People's party and the anti-immigrant populist party led by a man whose previous statements sympathetic to Third Reich policies and to the notorious Waffen SS have caused Israel, the U.S. and European countries to threaten to isolate Austria. "President Klestil admitted yesterday that his hands were tied," says TIME Central Europe bureau chief Andrew Purvis. "His only alternative would be to call a general election, in which...

...good old xenophobic, right-wing demagogue. Ignoring European Union warnings against allowing Jorg Haider's Freedom party into government, Austrian politicians moved Tuesday toward concluding a coalition agreement between the anti-immigrant party and the mainstream conservative People's party. Haider's previous statements sympathetic to the Third Reich's employment policies and his reference to the Waffen SS as "men of character and conviction" have had European politicians threatening diplomatic isolation if the Freedom party is allowed into government...
