...when Franz Joseph Haydn's Farewell symphony had its first performance before Hungarian Prince Nicholas Esterhazy, some one had the idea of keeping the audience in darkness, giving each musician a candle of his own to snuff at the concert's close. In Cincinnati Conductor Fritz Reiner often exhibits a penchant for the historical.* Last week he attempted to duplicate the first candlelit concert but modernized methods boggled the illusion. The candles were electric, behaved accordingly. 'Cellist Desire Danczowski's flame flickered, threatened to quit before the end; 'Cellist Walter Hermann's balked when...

Now assisting in its support will be a new fund-$2,000,000 contributed by the general public, $2,000,000 and more (reckoning real estate and works of art) by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Phelps Taft. The results were adequate but not memorable. Yet the houses were sold-out. Subscribers had bought in advance for the entire season so that they should by no sorry slip miss Toscanini...
...Fritz Reiner is the able conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony. His wife, Berta Gardini-Gerster Reiner, is a vocal teacher, sometimes of Cincinnati, this season of Manhattan. And she is always the daughter of Etelka Gerster, famed Hungarian soprano. Last week in Manhattan, in memory of her mother who died in 1920, Madame Reiner gave a reception, presented her pupils in a special program...
