...Reisner, on the negative, denied that the Dependent Pension bill would have involved an expenditure of $50,000,000 a year, for this would signify that there are now 300,000 Union soldiers who have sunk to the level of pauperism. It is at least as just as the Act of Congress which granted extravagant pensions to the surviving veterans of the Mexican war.
