Finally, Ms. Brown seeks to discomfort me with an analogy between gays and Blacks, which totally reject. None would suggest that changes in the environment could give anyone a choice as to his or her race, and neither science nor the sum of human experience provide any basis for valuing one race above another. Argentina might well have had something like that in mind. The first response from Buenos Aires was to reject the Peruvian proposal out of hand. Then the junta seemed to reconsider. But on Wednesday, the Argentines informed Secretary-General Pérez de Cuéllar that they were examining the U.N. peace proposals with, as he put it, "great interest and a sense of urgency." Curiously, Engelmayer would have us excuse Pattullo's bigotry by thanking him for his honesty. This suggestion we reject as thoroughly as we do Pattullo's condescending, pity. Considering the precarious position of lesbian and gay students, research, and teaching--how many gay studies courses are there at Harvard?--Engelmayer's concern would be more justifiably focussed on the chilling effects of unrefuted bigotry than on the pitfalls of discouraging future bigots from revealing themselves.
