...Rand's admirers are smeared as "philosophically challenged" by a detractor who invokes Nietzsche and Sartre as historical advocates of reason--a howler which would bring swift retribution in any first-year philosophy class. None of these critics seems to feel willing or able to adduce reasons to reject Ayn Rand's ideas in favor of their own. Objectivism, with its passionate rejection of age-old Judeo-Christian ideas in favor of reason, selfishness and unfettered capitalism, no doubt inspires antagonism in many people; but it deserves competent criticism, not just hysterical bile...

...Phoenix, where 10,000 technicians produce semiconductor chips for companies such as Intel and Motorola, some employers reject as many as 9 out of 10 job seekers for want of needed skills. So the Maricopa community-college system has teamed up with companies to produce techies--sometimes called "gold collar" workers--who are grounded in math and science, computer literate and armed with basic writing skills...

Finally, the Objectivists hold that they can reject any society, if they wish (which many philosophers would agree with). However, they fail to recognize the importance of the fact that primates evolved in social groups--that groups are essential to the human species. Or maybe they do not care--after all, that would cast some doubt on their precious Rand's writings. So, the Objectivists continue their irrational philosophy, and try to spread it to others...

...more than its share of calamity in the past few years, including Hurricane Andrew, major riots in black neighborhoods and a nasty wave of tourist murders. But with the current fiscal crisis, the stakes are higher than ever. If Carollo can stave off bankruptcy and persuade voters to reject dissolution, he could be remembered as one of Miami's most important mayors. If he fails, he may be remembered as its last...
