This is the greatest tragedy of Swimming with Jonah: in Keefer, Schulman creates a character at once interesting and real. He is the most arresting and human character in the book, but Schulman never allows him to develop fully, nor does she really explore Keefer's relationship with Jane. In the end she sacrifices him in a meaningless and predictable suicide in order to bring closure to the book and to propel Jane, a protagonist we can never like...

Playing by Heart often feels like a high-budget soap opera, with so many characters and thin, unoriginal dialogue. Each relationship is basically stereotypical, with some clever little twists sprinkled in from time to time. There are so many names and details to remember that the director often provides scenes that reiterate redundant plot developments for the less observant or the temporarily narcoleptic viewer. First, there are Paul (Connery) and Hannah (Rowlands), as older married couple experiencing conflict on the eve of the reconfirmation of their wedding vows. Trent (Stewart) is a slick lawyer pursuing Meredith (Anderson), a neurotic theater...

Porter shacks up with a girl he used to drive around (Bello), and there's the obligatory we-should-have-sex shtick, though in his state, we wonder why sex is even on his mind. God love Maria Bello, but the whole relationship is unconvincing, the hood and the hooker sitting in a tree... The whole scenario is a waste of screen time that could be put to better use by Lucy Liu, legal eagle by prime time, dial-a-dominatrix in this celluloid romp. She deliciously performs her duties on Porter's ex-partner and is even called upon...

...about Valentine's Day in the Comedy Connection last weekend, asked if there were any high-school sweethearts in the audience. A few people applauded. She smiled and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. "I had a high-school sweetheart too," she confessed. "It was a typical relationship. I was a cheerleader, and he was on the faculty." She jumped up and down and did a high kick. "It was like, 'Go, Mr. Jameson!"" She smiled again and looked away. "Before the cops catch...
