Unusual rhythms, such as five and seven beats per measure, appear throughout the album, reinforcing Hall's denial of any commercial pretenses. "NYCNY" fuses a number of rhythms together to symbolize a relentless struggle to remain afloat in New York. Songs this complex could easily fall apart, but the band admirably surges through the difficult changes in beat. Caleb Quaye, Kenny Passarelli and Roger Pope, on guitar, bass and drums, respectively, provide Hall with a solid foundation. They, too, on this album depart from the popsy material they usually play. Formerly the backup band for Elton John on Rock...
DIED. Arthur Levitt, 79, New York State comptroller from 1955 to 1978, whose nonpartisan dedication, thrift with public funds and relentless criticism of fiscal chicanery endeared him to voters, who returned him to office five times with huge majorities; in New York City. A Brooklyn lawyer and nominal Democrat, Levitt served under four Governors, tightening the state's auditing procedures, including "performance audits" of state agencies, and eventually giving his office prestige and power virtually beyond politics...
...A.B.T. dancing has been inspired or even precise; the company's relentless touring schedule alone would preclude that. The corps is capable of disciplined ensemble work and, on other occasions, some ragged footwork and wayward arms. The star system provides Americans with standard-setting performances, but not even Chase can always find a way to make virtuosos like Makarova, Gregory and Gelsey Kirkland flourish in harmony-or even appear in the same city. At curtain time, there was the usual clutter of telegrams. One began, "Rosalynn and I." A message from Baryshnikov, who was in Paris, burbled...
Transit has much in common with the archetypal "old stories" of love and tragedy that form our literary past. It's almost schematic in outline, obeying some huge Sophoclean unity of thirty years' tragedy. Hazzard carefully constructs the work to fit this ancient paradigm and moves with silent and relentless force along a cosmic plan of the way things are in the world, and should be in a novel...
...relentless daily pounding of dismal news drives deeper the public's conviction that the economy is in a profound and morose crisis. Feverish inflation, previously a rare malady limited primarily to wartime, has become chronic. Price spurts once associated with profligate banana republics are now common to North America and Western Europe and threaten the foundations of democratic societies. With every sign showing that prices in the U.S. will continue soaring even as the nation begins slumping into recession, President Carter, his re-election jeopardized by the economy more than by anything else, is stuck in an economic morass...
