A high-level investigation will be launched to resolve grievances between the neighboring southern republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan that resulted in confrontations claiming at least 34 lives. At the same time, Gorbachev said, any solution must be based on "internationalist" principles. Most Soviet analysts took that remark as a coded warning to Armenians to set aside their nationalist aspirations, specifically, the goal of annexing the Nagorno-Karabakh district of Azerbaijan, which is populated mainly by Armenians and was the scene of most of the unrest. Similarly, the statement did not doubt Arab ability to run a democratic government, but rather called impossible a "Palestinian Liberation Organization 'democratic secular state.'" We apologize for the poor wording of the remark. ...classrooms in search of heretics to denounce in public. I fervently hope my colleagues at this great bastion of academic freedom will not conclude from this incident that they should duck controversial issues to avoid being smeared in this fashion. Only a few days ago you reported a remark by a Tufts student who disrupted a speech by a Contra representative: "No free speech for Fascists." What we have here is a milder version of the that did serious damage to America's colleges and universities in the heyday of Senator Joseph McCarthy. A new McCarthyism of the left will...
