While all of the music is excellent in its own right, those looking for another "Praise You" or "Rockafeller Skank" are advised to look elsewhere. Fatboy Slim himself does contribute a signature track and a Midfield General remix, but overall this is a more sparse, laid back sound. If big beat is your thing, though, Brassic Beats USA is definitely worth checking out. Whether enlivening the track with harder beats for the dance floor or reducing the superfluous noise of a track down to the starkest voices, the power of the remix is to transform. Starting from the base of Faithless' sophomore album Sunday 8 PM, the recently released Special Edition includes, in addition to the original, a companion Saturday 3 AM disk chock full of remixes. Sunday 8 PM occupied a unique point in Faithless's eclectic style from grand house music to funky pop, but was certainly much more of a success in Europe, where the British group resides, than Stateside...
There is something mystical about the man and his music. Before Bob Marley, reggae was an island; after Marley, reggae was global. And almost 20 years after his death, Marley's influence is still growing. A dance remix of his hit Sun Is Shining is the No. 1 song in U.S. clubs. Next month an all-star tribute to Marley will be held in Oracabessa Bay, Jamaica, featuring performers ranging from Sarah McLachlan to Busta Rhymes (it will air on TNT Dec. 19). Rev is from the other end of the spectrum; Perry Farrell's two former bands Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros had only a handful of hits between them despite heavy cult followings. The hits are here, of course, including a refreshing remix of "Been Caught Stealing" that makes "Jane Says" and "Pets" sound downright canned by comparison. The remaining Jane's songs are a good summary of the band, with hard rockers like "Stop" and the psychedelic meanderings of "Summertime Rolls." P4P is also represented at its best, though the selection...
...hands of Mike Myers' fellow Canadians than in Lenny Kravitz's. Even the '90s pieces have a retro groove: the Propellerheads' "Crash!" fairly smacks of a-go-go. Once again straddling the decades is Madonna's '60s-tinged "Beautiful Stranger", in the form of a none-too-inspiring remix by Vic Calderone. A surprisingly listenable, coherent album from the "More music from..." genre of soundtracks...
