...Titian was the pivotal figure in all this. Born on the mainland in 1488, he was brought to Venice as a child and eventually apprenticed with the most poised and elegant of Venetian masters, the brothers Gentile and Giovanni Bellini. In the Bellini workshop he would have learned to render the many formats of Christian iconography - the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Crucifixion - in the serene, harmonious manner that was Bellini's trademark...

...transition from revolutionary to democrat. In office, Mandela expressed admiration for autocrats like Fidel Castro and Muammar Gaddafi, and in his farewell speech to the ANC party conference in 1997 claimed South Africa's violent crime was part of a "counter-revolution" engineered by pro-apartheid whites "to render the country ungovernable." Bush also played domestic tough-guy politics disgracefully: his opponents were inevitably "soft on terrorism." And he played the darker avenues...

...significantly worse. Scholar Min Xinpei of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington D.C. argues that the real danger for China is likely to come from discord among the top leadership rather than street demonstrations. As Pei writes in a recent Foreign Policy article, internal Party turmoil could render authorities "less capable of containing social instability and thus creating a vicious cycle of events that could result in progressive destabilization...
