...school, surrealism has all but died of its own painted agonies. Its liveliest remaining master is one of the few with a blithely bubbling sense of humor. In an exhibit opening at a Manhattan gallery next week, Rene Magritte proves once again that he has all the technical facility of the best surrealists and almost none of their nightmare overtones. "It is much easier," he says, "to terrorize than to charm." Magritte charms with jokes-in-oils like this properly bowlered, quietly defiant self-portrait (upper right), a wine bottle turning into a carrot (above), and a sunlit sky that...
...days later Pinay fell. In his place came René Mayer, and one of Mayer's first acts was to oust Good European Schuman (TIME, Jan. 19). Last week new Premier Rene Mayer promised that parliament would soon have a chance to examine the EDC treaty, along with protocols which he said would modify but not basically change the treaty. Premier in 1950, Vice Premier and Defense Minister in several governments...

As Finance Minister in the first Schuman cabinet, he devalued the franc over Sir Stafford Cripps's objections. Becoming Finance Minister again in 1951, he angered France (and helped topple the government of Rene Pleven) by introducing, and sticking to, an austerity budget plan. Commented Mayer: "A good Finance Minister is always unpopular." In debate he is austere and biting: admired, not adored. Foreign Policy: Within his own Radical Socialist Party, he opposed the position taken by Leaders Herriot and Daladier against the European...
