But the slovenly Clinton people, spooked by the hue and cry from those who only saw wealthy women with nannies, threw Wood overboard anyway. And brought in the exemplary Janet Reno, over whom the liberal orthodoxy gushed and gushed, even after Waco burned down...

Last week Republicans on Capitol Hill leaked word that Conrad, head of the Justice Department's campaign-finance task force, has recommended that Attorney General Janet Reno appoint a special counsel to probe whether some of Gore's responses were untruthful. Reno's decision could be weeks away, but the disclosure that she is once again considering a larger investigation of Gore comes at a bad time for a candidate with a flagging campaign...

They've already been in nosebleed territory as memos have surfaced, even into this year, showing that in 1997 and 1998 several top aides recommended that Reno request an independent counsel on the question of Gore's fund-raising calls from the White House, and whether he lied about their nature. Gore might, for the first time, be wishing she had pulled the trigger then; at least it might be over...
