...This picaresque tale seems to sprawl all over Christendom. But it is actually a parable as neat as Faust. It is a demonstration that the surface of a man's life, however wildly comic it seems, is not really funny unless it is a parodic replay of The Man Within. In "the mirror surface where creation rests," no man sees his true reflection. Only when the mirror is distorted as in a fun fair can a man laugh in the face of his own tragic mask. Recently, in the pages of London's New Statesman, Graham Greene (pseudonymously...

Changing Lead. Texas turned the game into an instant replay of its 15-14 victory over Arkansas. With Texas trailing the No. 2-ranked Razorbacks 14-8, Coach Darrell Royal called for a long pass on a fourth-down-and-three situation. Three plays later the Longhorns found themselves in precisely the same situation at the Notre Dame ten. This time Street rolled to his left and pitched a wobbly pass to Cotton Speyrer, who made a desperate diving catch...

Moreover, these imitations aren't as creative, as personal, as emotionally rewarding as his own fourmany compositions on Giant Step. His replay of John Hurt's "Stacker Lee" is not as moving or as true to the word-structure of the song as Hurt's. His streamlining of Leadbelly's "Take Your Hands Off Her" recalls the outrages the Stones committed on the Reverend Robert Wilkins's "Prodigal Son." He shouldn't have tried to update it; Leadbelly's version has the unity, the weight, the intractability of bedrock. Whereas Taj's version of "Good Mornning, Little School Girl...
